Meaning

for a short time, a period of time, trong chốc lát, trong khoảng thời gian ngắn

Examples

• The baby was quiet for a while. ( đứa bé im lặng được một lát)

• I haven't heard from you for a while. ( đã một thời gian tôi không nghe tin bạn )

• Haven't heard anything from you in a while (tôi đã không nghe bất thứ tin gì từ bạn trong một thời gian)
• After a while, we turned off the television and went for a walk. ( Sau một thời gian, chúng tôi đã tắt tivi và đi dạo bộ )

Vậy khi nào dùng "for", khi nào dùng "in"

• sử dụng "for"  - for a length of time, for seven days, dùng ở thì quá khứ.
• sử dụng "in" = "shortly"  for pending future action only, dùng ở thì tương lai.

I haven't seen you for a while/ for a long time (đã lâu không gặp)
I have not heard from you for a while. Tôi đã không nghe tin bạn trong một thời gian. 
I shall not heard from you in a while. Tôi sẽ không được nghe tin bạn trong một thời gian dài.
