When things are not going as planned, we can say they've gone DOWN THE PAN (TOILET)

(UK also down the pan) informal

› If something is or goes down the ​toilet, it is ​wasted or ​spoiled:After the ​drug ​scandal, his ​career went down the ​toilet.

Examples:

1. Jason has great dreams of becoming a football player, but they went down the pan when he broke his leg.
